After they re up you can snap a line to mark and trim the tails in a nice straight line to make up for any ridge warp or marking cutting and fixing errors.
A stick framed roof uses 2x4 s or 2x6 s or whatever you are framing with but has a ridge board running down the middle ridge line.
Sometimes the rafter will have a tail and extend out past the wall so that you have a soffit or overhang.
A simple gable shed roof is often built using 2 4 or 2 6 lumber for the rafters and 2 4 for the collar ties.

Wall plates and joists set out the wall plates to whatever centers you need for your gable roof 400 450 600 or 900 governed by the weight of roof covering ie tiles and cut fix the joists so they are parallel to each other and flush with the back edge of the wall plates.
The rafters are angle cut at the ridge end and notched with a birdsmouth where it meets the top plate of the supporting wall.

One is a failure of the hinge at the connection between the top plate of the wall and the gable end framing if the gable end is not balloon framed with continuous studs.
The three primary variables to consider when designing the eaves for a gable roof are the width of the gable trim the projection of the eaves and the details at the corner of the gable ends.
Use 8 penny nails to attach the first 2 in 4 in 5 1 cm 10 2 cm board to the wall studs.

You then have rafters running down from this ridge board and resting on the top wall plates.
Since 2009 section r602 3 has required that studs shall be continuous from support at the sole plate to a support at the top plate to resist loads perpendicular to the wall.
